An expedition to the high-altitude, cold-desert borderlands of North Sikkim, where mountains touch 17,000 feet.
We drive north, following the roaring Teesta river as it narrows into a glacier stream. The trees disappear, replaced by the stark, wind-swept plains of the Tibetan plateau. At 17,800 feet sits Gurudongmar, a sacred, crystal-blue lake surrounded by snow peaks that never fully freezes. You will stay in local wood-cabins in Lachen and Lachung, eat hot barley porridge, and walk through valleys of wild rhododendrons.
Route: Gangtok → Lachen → Gurudongmar Lake → Lachung.
