For over five hundred years, the Khasi people of Meghalaya have shaped the aerial roots of rubber fig trees into bridges — structures that grow stronger with every passing year, rather than weakening like anything built from timber or steel. What looks at first like a curiosity of nature is, in fact, a deliberate act of multi-generational engineering.
The process begins with a single areca nut trunk, hollowed and placed across a stream to guide the young roots of a nearby Ficus elastica tree. Over ten to fifteen years, those roots are trained, twisted, and woven by hand until they form a structure capable of holding dozens of people at once.
The most famous example, the double-decker bridge near Nongriat, took two generations to complete — begun by a grandfather, finished by his grandson. Today, only a handful of villages still maintain the knowledge and patience required to grow new bridges, and conservationists worry that the practice may not survive another generation without deliberate effort to pass it on.
